I Was A ‘Galamsey’ Operator For 6 Years — Veteran Gospel Singer, Great Ampong Reveals

Veteran singer Great Ampong- whose real name is Isaiah Kwadwo Ampong has said before he became a household name as a gospel singer, he was engaged in illegal mining.

According to him, difficulties as a young man growing up in Tarkwa, a mining community in Ghana led him to take part in the illegal mining activity, popularly known as ‘galamsey’.

The award-winning artist and serial hitmaker said he was doing galamsey for 6-years until he relocated to Accra in search of greener pastures. “I worked at a Galamsey site for about 6 years, I slept in a kiosk for 6 years and I later relocated to Accra where I lived in a church auditorium and slept on the pulpit for about 3 years.

“I want to tell the youth not to be greedy but they should be prayerful and rely on God’s time,” he stated in an interview on Accra-based station, Kingdom FM. He further disclosed how he sold biscuits at Kaneshie First Light when he first arrived in Accra.
